The final 33% of the climb is when you want to start picking it up – that’s when a lot of athletes start backing off. Most people will end up with a dead spot at the very top of the hill; it’s when they’re trying to recover and they’ve lost momentum. That’s really not the time to recover. The time to recover is when you’ve gone over the hill and start to go down the other side.
In order to be competitive you want to start picking it up so when you are about to crest the hill, you’re really pushing it hard and using your momentum to go over the top, then pushing yourself down the other side.
